Booze sales in grocery stores could affect recycling: Perks
By Gilbert Ngabo, Metro Toronto

Excited about being able to buy booze from the grocery store around the corner soon?
Coun. Gord Perks wants you to think about the environment.
“I want to make sure that city council considers options to properly deal with all those containers,” the Ward 14 councillor said.
Perks has written a letter to the city’s public works and infrastructure committee, expressing concern that the new provincial agreement on liquor sales could mean changes to the existing bottle return system.
Under the current system, The Beer Store buys beer and liquor containers for 10 or 20 cents each. It is not clear if shoppers will be able to return empties at the grocery stores for cash once the new agreement takes effect.
The committee approved a motion Tuesday asking city staff to voice those concerns to the province and make sure changes don’t negatively affect the city’s recycling program.
Perks, who spent some 20 years working with environmental movements, said the 2013-14 stewardship report showed The Beer Store’s recovery rate for refillable bottle is 99 per cent.
“My very strong preference would be that supermarkets are required to have refillable containers,” he said.
In early April, a number of environmental protection groups wrote to Premier Kathleen Wynne, urging her to ensure that any retailer of beer and wine abide by the deposit return system.
The return program collects far more alcohol containers than what’s collected through the blue box program, the letter said.
