Peace and the Doomsday Clock

A) I sometimes despair over mankind's inability to achieve peace. I am convinced that man is intrinsically a peaceful animal, and I really cannot understand why peace seems to be so unattainable.

B) Well, personally I don't think humans are intrinsically peaceful, We display signs of aggression that are triggered by greed, anger, revenge, selfishness and personal gratification from a very early age, and it is only lessons in social responsibility received from parents and society at large that help us curb these tendencies. But, sometimes they reemerge when certain conditions come into alignment, and this results in argumentative behavior, bullying, shoplifting, petty crime and violent crime. We are, by definition, intrinsically aggressive.

A) That is probably the saddest thing I have ever heard in my life, but yes, you are probably right. Nothing else can explain our headlong rush into total destruction. You'd have thought that we would have learned our lesson from the awful tragedies of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but no: we still continue to wage war on each other. Maybe we should recalibrate the Doomsday Clock so that it takes social factors into consideration.

B) Yes, That's not a bad idea.In it's present state the Doomsday Clock gives the impression of being affected only by the decisions of governments, but an increased awareness that peace relies on us all could be beneficial. We must teach our children to show tolerance in all situations and not judge people by race, creed or religion. Our children are the future, and it is our responsibility, as their teachers, to show them how to attain true peace. Meanwhile, the Doomsday Clock is creeping relentlessly to wards midnight.
